Carla Odio

Carla Odio was born in 1953 and is a Spanier and Costa Rican citizen. She
is a Professor of Pediatrics and Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the University
of Costa Rica Medical School. She is Clinical Chief of Infectious Diseases
in Neonatology, attending Physician in Infectious Diseases at the Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit, Chest Surgery and Hematology- Oncology Units at the National
Children´s Hospital, Health Sciences Center in San José, Costa
Rica. She obtained her M. D. degree in 1976 and her Pediatrics degree in 1980
at the above mentioned University and Hospital. Subsequently she obtained
her Infectious Diseases degree at the Southwestern Medical School, Health Sciences
Center in Dallas, Texas, United States of America in 1984. She is past president
of the Latin American Society of Pediatric Infectious Diseases (SLIPE), President
of the Costa Rican Chapter of the Alliance for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics
(APUA). She is a Board Member of the International Society of Infectious Diseases
(ISID) and of the World Society of Pediatric Infectious Diseases (WSPID). Professor
Odio lectures widely, has published over 160 scientific, peer reviewed papers, and
over 20 chapters on Pediatric Infectious Diseases Textbooks. She acts both
as reviewer and editor for major scientific journals. She is a recipient of
numerous scientific awards and grants for her research and publications on
the pathophysiology, immune modulation, and antibiotic therapy
of bacterial meningitis, septic arthritis and prosthetic cerebrospinal
fluid infections. She has published widely on neonatal infections, the prevention
and treatment neurosurgical infection, fungal infections and on the rational
use of antibiotics.
