1. General Policies

All abstracts must be submitted electronically through the electronic abstract submission system.
1. All abstracts must be received on or before November 1, 2009. The abstract deadline was extended until November 30, 2009.
   Abstracts received after this deadline will not be accepted for inclusion in the Congress.
2. All abstracts have a 350 word limit of text (not including presenter information and title).
3. Authors are advised to insure that their abstracts meet the criteria and guidelines below. All accepted abstracts will be published as is. Acceptance of the abstract in the program and assignment to a session are determined solely by the Program Committee based on a review of the abstract and its subject matter. Decisions of the Program Committee are final. Because of the logistics of assigning abstracts to sessions and the number of abstracts received, requests for particular types of presentations, sessions, days, or times will not be considered by the Program Committee.
1. Submitting authors are required to insure that all listed co-authors have reviewed the abstract, take responsibility for its content and agree with being listed as co-author.
2. All potential conflicts of interest for each co-author must be provided. Potential conflicts of interest include, but are not limited to, commercial interest in the research, and financial or in-kind support for the research, and financial or in-kind support for the research from entities with commerical interest in research.
4. The ICID Program Committee invites the submission of research abstracts of excellent quality in all areas related to infectious diseases. Authors with original research are encouraged to submit abstracts related to bacterial, fungal, parasitic, and viral infections, the pathogenesis of infectious diseases, antimicrobial agents, and related fields of investigation. All abstracts are reviewed by subcommittees of the 14th ICID Program Committee for the quality and originality of their research, scientific content, and presentation.

Abstracts may be accepted into one of three categories:
1. Oral presentation: The presenting author will be required to make a
   7 minute Powerpoint presentation that concisely summarizes the research question, the methods used, the results and their significance. Abstracts accepted for oral presentation will be published as a supplement to the International Journal of Infectious Diseases (IJID) and distributed to congress participants on site.
2. Poster presentation: The presenting author will be obliged to present the poster during the poster session to which it has been assigned. Abstracts accepted for poster presentation will be published as a supplement to the International Journal of Infectious Diseases (IJID) and distributed to congress participants on site.
3. International Scientific Exchange (ISE): Abstracts accepted for ISE will not be presented at the ICID. ISE accepted abstracts will be distributed to congress participants in the Scientific Exchange Abstract Book.

5. As part of the ongoing educational mission of the International Society for Infectious Diseases, the Program Committee encourages investigators from low–resource countries who have not previously submitted abstracts to international meetings to submit their original research. To assist such investigators the Program Committee has outlined the following guidelines for developing an abstract:
   1. Abstracts must be based on original results that have not or will not be published or presented before the 14th ICID begins on March 9, 2009.
   2. It is recommended that abstracts follow a format similar to that used at other international meetings and in journals. An acceptable structure for an abstract includes:
   • Background: A statement of the hypothesis or research question.
   • Methods: An explanation of the study design and experimental methods used.
   • Results: A concise summary of the major findings of the experiment or study. Sufficient data must be provided to permit evaluation by the reviewers and public reading the abstracts. Statements such as "additional information to be presented at the meeting" are not acceptable.
   • Conclusion: Summary of the overall findings and the importance of the study.
   Abstracts that represent the presentation of single clinical cases of previously reported diseases, investigations of compounds that involve inadequate numbers of study subjects, or in vitro studies of nonrepresentative microbiologic strains, or abstracts that lack quantitative data will not be accepted. Authors are discouraged from submitting multiple abstracts from the same project. Each abstract will be judged on its own merits without reference to other submissions, Repetitive abstracts will be rejected.
6. All abstracts must be submitted in ENGLISH. The Program Committee recognizes that a number of abstracts will be from individuals for whom English is not their primary language. Though the focus of the review by the Program Committee will be the science, the Committee recommends that individuals who need assistance in writing in English have their abstracts reviewed before submission to the Congress.
7. Abstracts must be submitted through the electronic abstract submission system.
8. All abstracts will be reviewed by the Program Committee, and a notice of acceptance or rejection will be sent to the submitting authors only. It is the responsibility of the submitting author to notify other co-authors of the Committee's decision. Session assignments will be mailed by December 20, 2009 to the address given for correspondence. Once scheduled, presentations cannot be moved in the program. Authors are encouraged to submit their abstracts as early as possible.
9. By submitting an abstract the author(s) agree to transfer all copyrights to ISID and to allow publication of submitted information on the ISID web site, the International Journal of Infectious Diseases (IJID), the Scientific Exchange Abstract Book or other Society related publications. Authors of accepted oral abstracts grant permission to ISID to audio/video record all presentations for future distribution.
10. Instructions will be sent to the authors whose abstracts are accepted for oral or poster presentation. For each abstract accepted for presentation, at least one author must attend the Congress and present the contribution.
11. Payment of the Congress registration fee should accompany the abstract. If your abstract is not accepted or you are unable to attend, a refund will be made in conformity with the provisions of the Congress refund policy. If the registration fee of the presenting author is not received by February 1, 2010, the abstract will not be published.
    
    Authors who do not attend the session for which they have been scheduled will be ineligible to submit an abstract for the next ICID.

2. Electronic Submission
   Abstracts can be easily submitted via the electronic abstract submisison system. From the ISID web site, you can fill out the abstract form directly or insert your computerized text. Detailed information and assistance on electronic submission are given when you visit this site.
