Kuala Lumpur is the exciting venue selected for the 13th International
Congress on Infectious Diseases in June 2008. Sponsored by the International
Society for Infectious Diseases (ISID), a vibrant organization committed
to international health, the meeting will continue the pattern of
overwhelming successes in recent years in Lisbon, Cancun, Singapore,
and Buenos Aires.
Today the ISID has over 20,000 members from more than 120 countries.
We host ProMED-mail, the vast international surveillance program
for emerging diseases with 40,000 active participants and 10,000
website hits a day. ProMED-mail identified the SARS epidemic two
weeks before its global recognition. Our International Journal
of Infectious Diseases and Guide to Infection Control in the Hospital—now
in eight languages with 50,000 copies given free to health care
workers in the developing world—continue to distinguish
us. Furthermore, the ISID Small Grants and Fellowship awards
provide support for scientists engaged in cutting edge research.
