Held at the Centro de Congressos de Lisboa / AIP, Praca das Industrias, 1300-307 Lisbon

Awards
Chiron | Sanofi Pasteur | ISID New Investigator
The deadline for abstract submission for these awards is February 15, 2006.
Abstracts must be submitted electronically according to the guidelines for abstract submission.

Chiron Vaccines Awards for Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases were created by Chiron Vaccines to identify and reward researchers for their work in furthering the understanding of infectious disease epidemiology. Two abstracts will be selected for the award. Each award winner will receive US$ 2,500 in addition to reimbursement of travel, accommodation, and registration expenses for the 12th ICID. This year, since the Congress will be held in Portugal, only researchers working in Europe are eligible for the prizes.

This is the 8th Congress for which Chiron Vaccines has sponsored the program. The first awards were presented at the 5th ICID in Nairobi to researchers from Africa. Chiron Vaccines, one of the most dynamic research organizations in infectious disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention, supports this award to recognize researchers for their contributions in the epidemiology of infectious diseases.

Eligibility and Application Procedure: the Program Committee and a representative from Chiron Vaccines will select the award winners. Abstracts meeting the following criteria will be considered:

(1) abstracts must focus on infectious disease epidemiology
(2) abstracts must be accepted for presentation at the 12th ICID
(3) researchers should be at an early stage in their research career
(4) researchers must be from Europe

Members of the ISID Executive Committee and Council and employees of Chiron Vaccines or its affiliates are not eligible.

The Chiron Vaccines Awards for the 12th ICID will be presented during the Opening Ceremony on Thursday, June 15, 2006. The recipients’ names as well as brief descriptions of their work will be published in ISID News, an official publication of the International Society for Infectious Diseases.

Sanofi Pasteur Awards for Communicable Disease Epidemiology were created to stimulate research on and emphasize the importance of applied epidemiology in the field of communicable diseases for the overall improvement of health.

Appropriate research may be based on laboratory investigation (e.g., serotypes of pneumococcus found in invasive disease in children or adults; seroprevalence of hepatitis A according to age), clinical investigation (e.g., risk factors for dengue fever), epidemiologic field work (e.g., morbidity and mortality from influenza, incidence of Lyme disease), health economics (e.g., medical and social costs of influenza, cost-benefit of vaccination program), or a combination of these topics.

Two awards sponsored by Sanofi Pasteur will be presented for the best abstracts accepted for presentation at the Congress. Each award consists of US$ 2,000 in addition to reimbursement of travel, accommodation, and registration expenses for the 12th ICID.

Eligibility and Application Procedure.
There are no age or professional requirements for the awards. The sole requirement is the acceptance of an abstract indicating outstanding accomplishment in the field of epidemiology of communicable diseases. All abstracts addressing communicable diseases will be considered for the award. Members of the ISID Executive Committee and Council, staff and employees of Sanofi Pasteur or their affiliates are not eligible. Final selection of the candidates will be based on the recommendation of the ISID Program Committee with the agreement of the Medical and Scientific Directors of Sanofi Pasteur.

The awards will be presented by a member of the ISID Executive Committee and a representative of the Medical Affairs Department of Sanofi Pasteur during the Opening Ceremony on Thursday, June 15, 2006. The recipients’ names as well as brief descriptions of their work will be published in ISID News, an official publication of the International Society for Infectious Diseases. Awardees will also be honored at a dinner hosted by the sponsors.
