The Chiron Vaccines Awards for Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases were created by Chiron Vaccines to identify
and reward researchers for their work in furthering the understanding of infectious disease epidemiology. Two
abstracts accepted for presentation at the 10th ICID that meet the award criteria will be selected for the prizes.
Each award winner will receive US $2,500 in addition to reimbursement of travel, accommodation, and registration
expenses for the 10th ICID. Since the 10th ICID will be held in Asia, only researchers working in Asia are eligible
for the 2002 awards.
Chiron Vaccines, one of the most aggressive and dynamic research organizations in infectious disease diagnosis,
treatment, and prevention, supports this award to recognize researchers for their contributions in the epidemiology
of infectious diseases.
This is the sixth Congress for which Chiron Vaccines has sponsored the program. The first awards were presented at
the 5th ICID in Nairobi to researchers from Africa. At the 6th ICID in Prague, prizes were given to researchers from
Eastern European countries, and participants from Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific region received the awards
at the 7th ICID in Hong Kong. At the 8th ICID in Boston awards were given to scientists from the Americas. Awards at
the 9th ICID were made to participants from South America.
The Chiron Vaccines Awards for the 10th ICID will be presented by a member of the ISID Executive Committee and a
representative of Chiron Vaccines during the Opening Ceremony on Monday, March 11, 2002. The names of the
award recipients and brief descriptions of their work will be published in ISID News, the newsletter of the ISID.
Eligibility and Application Procedure
The award winners will be selected by the ICID Program Committee and a representative from Chiron Vaccines.
Abstracts considered for the award must meet the following criteria:
- The abstract must focus on infectious disease epidemiology.
- The abstract must be accepted for presentation at the 10th ICID.
- The researchers should be at an early stage in their research
career.
- For awards at the 10th ICID the researchers must be from Asia.
Members of the ISID Executive Committee and Council and employees of Chiron Vaccines or its affiliates are not
eligible.
The Aventis Pasteur Awards for Communicable Disease Epidemiology
were created to stimulate research on and to emphasize the importance
of applied epidemiology in the field of communicable diseases for
the overall improvement of health. Appropriate research may be based
on laboratory investigation (e.g., serotypes of pneumococcus
found in invasive disease in children or adults; seroprevalence of
hepatitis A according to age), clinical investigation (e.g., risk
factors for dengue fever), epidemiological field work (e.g., morbidity
and mortality from influenza, incidence of Lyme disease), health economics
(e.g., medical and social costs of influenza, cost-benefit of vaccination
program), or a combination of these topics.
Three awards will be presented for the best abstracts accepted for presentation at the Congress: one for Europe,
sponsored by Aventis Pasteur MSD, and one each for North America and for the other regions of the world, sponsored by
Aventis Pasteur. Each award consists of US $2,000 in addition to reimbursement of travel, accommodation, and
registration expenses for the 10th ICID.
It is anticipated that the awards will be presented by a member of the ISID Executive Committee and a representative
of the Medical Affairs Department of Aventis Pasteur during the Opening Ceremony on Monday, March 11, 2002.
The names of the award recipients and brief descriptions of their work will be published in ISID News, the newsletter
of the ISID. Awardees will also be honored at a dinner hosted by the sponsors.
Eligibility and Application Procedure
There are no age or professional requirements for the awards. The sole requirement is the acceptance of an abstract
indicating outstanding accomplishment in the field of epidemiology of communicable diseases. All abstracts addressing
the epidemiology of communicable diseases will be considered for the award. Final selection of the candidates will
be based on the recommendation of the ISID Program Committee with the agreement of the Medical and Scientific
Directors of Aventis Pasteur.
Members of the ISID Executive Committee, Council, and staff and employees of Aventis Pasteur or their affiliates are
not eligible.
