Welcome to the International Society for Infectious
Diseases (ISID). Our 20,000 members are very much focused on the educational
needs of developing countries. In our quest to prevent and control
infections globally, we meet those needs with a biannual international
conference, the bimonthly International
Journal of Infectious Diseases, ISID
News (the quarterly newsletter), the provision of training
and research grants, the Guide
to Infection Control in the Hospital (now printed in six languages
and freely available to those from less-developed countries), ProMED-mail
Surveillance System, and access to experts worldwide.
The ISID is committed to the concept that what happens in a remote
village oceans away is important to world health. Since many infectious
agents are equal opportunity pathogens, citizens of developed countries
are often as vulnerable as poor natives in distant communities. Furthermore,
timely international communication is essential for control. All of
these concepts were clearly illustrated with the emergence and global
spread of the SARS pandemic. In fact, ProMED-mail was the first active
surveillance system to notify the world of the outbreak that would later be known as SARS
and did so weeks before international attention became riveted on this problem.
The international transmission of known and currently unknown pathogens
is an ineluctable fact of nature. But members of ISID can make a difference
with the clinical recognition, global reporting, laboratory discovery,
worldwide education, policy development, prevention and control. Ours
is a vibrant society committed to global health. You too can make
a difference in your career by joining us. Become
a member today.

The Program for Monitoring Emerging
Diseases is an electronic outbreak reporting system that monitors
infectious diseases globally. ProMED-Mail serves as a central site
for news, updates, and discussions of outbreaks of emerging and re-emerging
diseases that affect human health. ProMED-mail provides up-to-date
information on disease outbreaks around the world, seven days a week.
